I've been called just about every Asian slur in the book:
"Chink"
"Chino" (which is basically "Chink" in Spanish)
"Nip"
"Gook"
"Charlie"
"Jap"
"Nip"
(Some even worse and more severe)
And of course, this little gem directed at me and my other Asian friends:
"It's a little Nippy out here, don't you Chink so?"
Hilarious. (No, not really.)
Nevermind that I'm Filipino-American. I just happen to look Chinese, Japanese or Vietnamese to whoever was dishing out the insults. I'm still standing but it's just part of my growing up 30 years ago - very much the minority in Hoboken, NJ.
So, I was a little surprised to see that this was on ESPN.com:
Really? "Chink in the Armor" as the headline? Along with a shot of Jeremy Lin above it? I guess 30 years ago, when I was a kid, I can understand. But to still have this lingering in 2012 is just appalling?
Forbes.com had this great editorial here: " ESPN Uses ' Chink in the Armor ' Line Twice-- Did Linsanity Just Go Racist? "
